I think it's because many people are struggling with the bare necessities of life: food, clothing, and shelter. And of course clean water to drink.
It's just terrible what's happening with the weather in the Gulf Coast, and I feel awful for all those poor and middle-income Americans who have nowhere to go. However we also need to remember that the tsunami last year killed far, far more people... people who were about ten times worse off than the average American. Personally I donate to the Red Cross because they are a well-respected international relief organization.
