| "Just starting SAM-e; brand & dosage info." , Tue 7 Sep 23:35:
I tried SJW (900mg/day Perika) for a couple months for mild-moderate depression and anxiety from constant worrying, with no positive effect but rather a negative one--it made me more obsessive and anxious. I switched to 5-HTP and seemed to have good results, but I wasn't sure if it was simply due to not being on SJW anymore, and not really due to the 5-HTP. So I decided to take a drug holiday and after a few weeks, I felt pretty bad, so I decided to try SAM-e. I have been on it for a week and don't notice anything yet, but they say it takes at least 2 weeks to see any effect.
I've considered several brands, and each one has its own alleged claim to fame. Here's some info. on the ones that seem to be the best, them from their websites:
PHARMATON FLEXIUM 400 MG: "Most joint health supplements provide a type of SAM-e stabilized by a salt known as tosylate (variations include disulfate tosylate and disulfate ditosylate). But the SAM-e in Flexium is stabilized with 1,4 butanedisulfonate. This patented form, known as SD-4, has been proven to maintain its potency longer than the tosylate form, and is also less acidic. Most important, however, is that SD-4 is the only form of SAM-e that has undergone full toxicological testing for safety and purity. It is the number-one form of SAM-e prescribed in Europe." Pharmaton
NATURE MADE MOOD PLUS DOUBLE STRENGTH 400 MG: "moodplus™ SAM-e is the same form of SAM-e available and administered for over 20 years by doctors in Europe. It is the only form of SAM-e studied in over two decades of research, as well as the most documented form in respected medical journals." Nature Made
JARROW SAM-E 400 MG: "SAM-e is a chiral molecule and therefore consists of two forms: (S,S) SAM-e and (R,S) SAM-e. The biologically active form is the (S,S) structure, while the (R,S) structure is biologically inactive. Jarrow Formulas' SAM-e is made naturally by microbiological fermentation and then specially processed without solvents to preserve 68-80% (S,S) SAM-e, the highest active level available." Jarrow
I started with Nature Made but then went out of town to Chicago and forgot to bring it, so I bought some Flexium that I found at Osco drugstore. This brand is the ONLY one I've found that has the butanedisulfonate form of SAM-e, which is apparently more stable than the usual tosylate form you see everywhere. I've scoured the net for this stuff, and it's very hard to find. The only place I found it was at valleyvet.com and ebay, but I feel uneasy buying it from ebay.
The other two are easier to find, especially Nature Made, which is available at Target and some drugstores. All three cost about $30 for 30 400 mg tablets(iherb has great prices on the Jarrow brand). Most SAM-e product labels advise taking 1 400 mg tablet per day, but many studies found results when administering 1,600 mg a day, which would cost about $120 a month! So I'm starting at the 400 mg dose and I hope to see results.
I'll keep you all posted on how it goes!
